Contemporary Gestalt therapy is a holistic, relational, non hierarchical form of counselling and psychotherapy that regards relationships as fundamental to the formation of a sense of self, and hence, wellbeing.
Gestalt therapy recognises the relationship between therapist and client, in the present moment as a vital, secure and creative ground for growing awareness, experiencing new and alternative ways of being together, and increasing capacity for change.
The German word Gestalt may be roughly translated to mean ‘whole’ or ‘to make whole’. Gestalt therapy concerns itself with processes of meaning-making, or how sense is made of experience. These processes contribute to the unique whole that is each person. A client’s total situation is valued & considered, including environmental, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
The objective of Gestalt therapy is to facilitate the expansion and deepening of awareness through: paying attention to present experience; forming an appreciation of the context within which it emerges; and developing the relationship between practitioner and client.
The Gestalt approach helps people to understand themselves within the broader context of their lives and emphasises the way in which they are shaping, and being shaped, by their environment.
The aim is to enable people to live a flexible and creative life, free from patterns of ‘fixed’ behaviour that can reduce self growth and a sense of satisfaction in their lives.
